Full Spectrum Cannabis oil: An Explanation and It's Benefits

So, what is full-spectrum cannabis oil, and why is it superior to cheap distillate? Well, first off, distillate is made from trim, not the bud (flower). This means the input material contains leaves, which is where chlorophyll is produced. The procedures used by distillate manufacturers extract this chlorophyll, resulting in a green product. To cheaply clean it up, it is distilled at high temperatures and low pressures. This process yields a material that is almost pure THC. As you know, THC without terpenes is like beer without hops. But worse than the lack of taste is the loss of the entourage effect. Terpenes and cannabinoids work together to produce the desired effects. As a result, terpenes—or, sadly, flavorings—are added back to the distilled THC. Distillate is an artificial attempt to recreate true cannabis oil, and the result is a mediocre tasting hit that burns the back of your throat.

Full-spectrum extracts are not distilled and contain the essence of the plant. There are several varieties, but I will focus on Jersey Clouds products and what makes them different from all the others. First, we use high-quality flower from Garden Greens and extract it using our patented method. Yes, we use whole bud flower. Flower contains very little chlorophyll, which allows us to extract the flower pigments. Our method also retains all the natural terpenes present in the flower, so our extracts are strain-specific.

Where we differ from other so-called full-spectrum products is that we do not remove the flower pigments. So, what are these flower pigments?

There are two main compound classes that color cannabis flower: Carotenoids and Anthocyanins. 

- Carotenoids impart a yellow to orange hue. This is the color of carrots, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe melons. Common carotenoids include beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These compounds are all potent antioxidants. 

- Anthocyanins impart a red to purple color to the flower. They are also strong antioxidants and are found in blueberries, plums, eggplant, and red cabbage and onions. The various anthocyanins are derived from anthocyanidin, the parent molecule of the series.

You know that eating highly colored fruits and vegetables is good for you, and the same holds true for cannabis. These potent antioxidants may contribute to the relatively benign effects cannabis smoke has on the lungs, especially compared to tobacco. We also believe that these compounds add to the taste and certainly contribute to the smoothness of our products. Retaining these beneficial compounds in cannabis extract is essential for a full-spectrum product, and that’s exactly what we do.
